Project Awards

The original Climate Tempered Community concept was selected to receive a Gold Medal award in 1993 from the United States’ National Association of Home Builders.   A panel of judges selected this project from hundreds of others to in the Best of Senior Housing category.  The gold medal was awarded to the CTC’s originator, Brian Kuhn, as part of the annual NAHB Annual convention held at Las Vegas, Nevada.  The project was featured in BUILDER magazine and SENIOR HOUSING NEWS in March of 1993.

The original CTC utilized a clearspan dome.

BUILDER Magazine wrote this about the CTC concept…

“The judges pronounced this bold, in-progress project the next generation of seniors housing.  Targeted to affluent seniors who traditionally head south for the Sunbelt, this ‘indoor’ community brings the Sunbelt to them in the form of climate controlled leisure and living spaces combined under one futuristic dome.

The central domed area is 230 feet across, and contains a putting green, lighted walking paths, jogging track, tennis courts, swimming pool, gardens, a pond, stream and waterfall stocked with fish.  Landscaping mimics various climates so residents can choose their favorite places to live.

Mixed-use zoning allows pharmacies, boutiques, a library, theater, and café to be built within the dome.  Living spaces are conventional; New England architecture accented with warmer-climate interior designs or colors.”

The clearspan dome has now been replaced by a more 'linear design', which allows the roof to be retractable for natural ventilation.
